Center of Excellence for Indian Heritage in Digital Space - Immersive Digital Visualizations of Ajanta, Ellora and Dwaraka

Ajanta Caves is arguably, the only ancient heritage site in the world that combines, rock cut architecture, mural paintings & sculpture. 2000 years old Ajanta paintings are a national treasure. The first phase of this project aims to preserve these invaluable paintings, sculptures, and architecture of Ajanta caves by leveraging technologies viz, 3D Digital scanning, 3D Filming and VR filming.

The objective of this mission is two-fold; to utilize this digital documentation for meaningful and in-depth research while also in parallel carry our nation's legacy in a captivating form as a 3D movie and VR capsule, to the current and future generations.

The project is funded under the Science and Heritage Research Initiative (SHRI) of the Department of Science and Technology.

  • Preservation: Creating a digital replica of the historical monument & heritage site can help in its preservation by reducing foot traffic and the potential for damage.

  • Enhanced Visitor Experience: The Digital Ajanta experience provides visitors with a more immersive and interactive experience, allowing them to explore the historical monument & heritage site from different angles and perspectives.

  • Increased Accessibility: The digital recreations can provide greater accessibility for visitors who may not be able to physically visit the site. For example, people with disabilities or those who are unable to travel to the site due to financial or other constraints.

  • Educational Value: The Digital Ajanta experience can be used as an educational tool to teach visitors about the history and cultural significance of the site.

  • Cultural Exchange: The Digital Ajanta content can be shared with other countries and cultures, promoting cultural exchange and appreciation.

    • Shri. Prasad Pawar (www.prasadpawar.com) has dedicated more than 3 decades towards invaluable work intensively on Ajanta caves. His deep understanding of the Ajanta caves, research and passion is channelized towards preserving this Glorious monument.
